THE place! Caleb’s childhood dream… the first place he can remember longing to visit, the place he’d lay in bed, falling asleep to the descriptions brought to life in his imagination. Those Pilgrims. Fleeing the oppressive religious environment that was everything they knew, spending a dozen years in a more open-minded, welcoming country, and about half leaving once more, to venture across an ocean… and try. Risk everything, for the chance of “a whole new world.”
The Jamestown settlers arrived in Virginia the same year The Pilgrims left England. There was no one else. One “success” story. 102 people boarded a ship, and almost half of them didn’t get off of it. Isn’t that crazy? 56 people built Plymouth, the second colony. The sheer insanity (mixed with nobility, flaws, brilliance, critical errors, impressive capacity, unimpressive choices, and courage) of such an endeavor has always cause Caleb to marvel.
I’ll continue to share more about his spiritual journey the last decade, but the significance for him of seeing this transition place will be remembered by us forever. As fascinating as their original English homes would be to see, or Plymouth! wow! We’d love to! But… the in-between place. The place before The Place. The place after Not Here. Leiden was special.
