In 2010 my best friend, Lydia, and I took a trip to London and while there we explored Brighton for a day. It took a hold of me… I knew I loved it while I was there - it felt like a fantasy combination of sea side town, vintage cute, and “somewhere over the rainbow” (or ocean). But I always find it fascinating what sticks once a trip is done. Over the years I’ve wanted to come back to Brighton so often. It was a cheery memory I wanted to return to. And that’s not always the case! Sometimes you go places - and even love them! - but don’t really feel compelled to go back. Brighton got to me. I had to go back.
I think the main draw was how much I knew my mom would love it. Getting to come with my sister, husband, and kids was - obviously - meaningful to me. But the best part was that my sister, Katie, said “This place reminds me of mom,” when I hadn’t mentioned that AND it was her favorite part of the trip with us.
Some of the highlights:
Laughing so hard in nervous fear at the top of “Helter Skelter,” an old wooden slide on the board walk pier… Rue and I couldn’t do it!
The memorable fried chicken sandwiches we ate on the chilly beach
Mary Poppins music playing on the boardwalk
Resting in the grass outside the Royal Pavilion, while the kids played tag
The beautiful windows and shops… just the happy feeling of walking around under the pastel bunting
